Prior to the opening of the new Istanbul airport, Atatürk Airport and Sabiha Gökçen Airport were in service in Istanbul. However, these two airports failed to meet the growing demands of Istanbul, one of the world's major transfer centers, and it was inevitable to build a new airport with, of course, a higher capacity. Works have been going on for the world's largest airport project...

The new airport is located 35 km outside the city centre. The giant airport, built on an area of 76.5 million square metres, consists of a total of four phases. The first phase, which opened in October 2018, has 2 runways and passenger capacity is 90 million. Once the airport reaches full capacity, it will be able to provide services to 200 million passengers with more than 300 destinations a year.

Where's The New Airport?
Located 36 km from Levent on the European side, 40 km from Taksim, 47 km from Üsküdar on the Anatolian side and 52 km from Kadıköy, the new airport is rising in Çatalca - Göktürk-Arnavutköy intersection point on the Black Sea coast. The airport is located at a point connected to the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and the Northern Marmara motorway.

How To Get To The New Airport?
Reaching to Istanbul New Airport is easy for passengers. It is possible to go to the airport easily with the vehicles of IETT, Istanbul Seyahat and Havaist which provides shuttle to the airport from certain points of the city. Passengers with their luggage can benefit from shuttle services from 44 different spots. Havaist, which operate 24/7, usually provides services from the city to the airport and from the airport to the city every 15-40 minutes. IETT buses can be reached from Halkalı, Mahmutbey, Mecidiyeköy, Atatürk Airport, Mescid-i Selam and Alibeykoy Bus Terminal. It is also possible to travel between the airport, Çorlu and Tekirdağ using Istanbul Seyahat.

When Will The New Airport Be Completed?
The new Istanbul airport aims to be the largest airport in the world, when the remaining parts scheduled to be finished in 2028 is completed. The first phase of the new Istanbul airport was inaugurated in 2018, but construction of other phases still continues. It was announced that parts of the first phase would be completed in 2021. When completed, the first phase will include three runways, maintenance rooms, support facilities, a terminal building and a shopping mall area. Passenger capacity is expected to increase to 90 million.
