HISTORY OF MUGLA
Mugla, the city where lots of civilizations have grown and developed since ancient times, is not known when or by whom exactly founded. While various sources claim that Hittites are the first settlements in this region, it is stated in some other sources that the history of the city dates back to 3000 BC.

The name “Caria” has been used to call the region for centuries, starting from Aydın reaching to the area where Dalaman Stream is poured into the sea; and this region borders Lydia in the north, Lycia in the south and Phrygian states in the interior parts.

The region which was ruled by the Persian Empire in 546 BC was also dominated by the Macedonian King Alexander the Great in 334 BC, the Kingdom of Bergama in 189 BC, the Roman Empire in 133 BC and the Byzantine Empire in 395 BC.

NATURAL BEAUTIES
Considered to be one of the most picturesque cities of Turkey, Mugla contains large forestland and shrubberies in nearly 70 percent of its total land. The lush and fertile forestland is mostly covered with Turkish pine, larch, pinus pinea, cedar, juniper and Anatolian sweet gum tree which is a very rare fragrant plant.

Located at the intersection of the Mediterranean and Aegean seas, Mugla boasts of a coastline of about 1,500 km. It is not surprising to find beautiful bays and islands along these coasts, which is an outstanding example of a ria coastline. The natural beauties of Mugla also contains Bodrum, Fethiye and Marmaris coasts, which are world-famous mediterranean areas. Add the Gulf of Gökova, Ölüdeniz and Butterfly Valley which is home to rarely-seen colorful butterflies, to the list of natural beauties of Mugla.

Without a doubt, Mugla has breathtaking world-famous regions such as Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Datca. The city is proud of its special attractions so many to fit into a large travel book. Some prominent regions of Mugla as such:

Bodrum: located on the western part of Mugla, is surrounded by Aegean Sea in north, west and south. Bodrum is counted as the luckiest region of Mediterranean coasts with its impressive bays, gulfs and coasts; it has wonderful beaches and amazing bays to relax and watch endless blue during the day, such as Gumbet, Turgutreis, Bitez, Akyarlar, Yalıkavak, Gumuşluk and Turkbuku. As well as being a favorite region for Turkey's yacht tourism, Bodrum has numerous dazzling bays; Karaada, Kargacık Bükü, Pabuç Burnu, Kargı Adası, Alakışla, Küçük Çatı, Büyük Çatı, Yedi Adalar, Longöz, Değirmen Bükü, Karacasöğüt and Sedir Island or Seven Islands are the most visited places by yatch enthusiasts.

Marmaris: Receiving a notable amount of rainfall, Marmaris will possibly leave its mark on visitors with its lush forests and remarkable bays. Considering its eye-catching coasts and beautiful islands and those magnificant beaches that starting from the city center and continue 8 km along, it won’t be wrong to say Marmaris is a reflection of heaven on earth. The must-see list goes with Iztuzu beach, Dalyan beaches which stand as natural habitat of sea turtles, healing natural mud baths, Cleopatra Island and Kizkumu beach where you can almost walk to the middle of the sea. As well as its deep blue sea, the green trees reaching toward the sea and beautiful hills offer a panoramic view.

Fethiye: Having the most impressive coastal geography in Turkey, Fethiye is probably the leading touristic destination with its adorable bays and lush mountains. The beaches in the region also serve as a natural home to caretta carettas, which are on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red list of endangered species. Fethiye has made a name as a significant touristic place with its unique view and geography.

Datca: Datça is a heaven on earth with its unspoilt nature and geography surrounded by sea on three sides. A seaside town where you can enjoy beautiful nature in its untouched bays and crytal clear sea, Datca is located in the middle of Hisaronu and Gokova Gulfs, which are also world-famous.

CLIMATE OF MUGLA
Summers are hot and dry while winters are mild and rainy in Mugla where the typical Mediterranean climate is seen. From time to time, the temperature decreases in the inner parts due to influence of continental climate. Even more, it can be snowy for 1 or 2 days in a year. But snowfall is not seen in the coastal areas.

ATTRACTIONS IN MUGLA
Mugla, a paradise-like city of Turkey, offers many options for both tourists and its residents. In the city where it is possible to spend leisure time with almost all outdoor sports, there are also many ancient cities and museums for history and culture enthusiasts, while nice restaurants, entertainment places and cafes await those who wish to have a pleasant time.

Ölüdeniz (Blue Lagoon): Taking the name from its still nature, Ölüdeniz makes a difference with white sands and crystal clear turquoise sea. Named as one of the most beautiful bays in numerous surveys, Ölüdeniz is a part of Fethiye district.

Butterfly Valley: Located at the foot of a steep and deep canyon, the fascinating beach is named after the butterflies that visit the valley. Visitors can enjoy the beach, spend a few days in their authentic cabins with a peaceful and tranquil setting or have a good time watching the endemic butterfly species in the valley which is only accessible by boat or by trekking on a challenging route.

Kleopatra Beach: Cleopatra Beach, located in Sedir Island, is a very popular place with its golden sands and magnificent sea.

Ancient Theater of Halicarnassus: Ancient Theater of Halicarnassus in Bodrum is estimated to have been built in the 4th century BC. The theater, one the oldest and most beautiful historical buldings in Turkey is also attracts visitors with its incredible view.

Bodrum Castle: Being the symbol of the region, the castle wasbuilt in AD 15th century. Built by the hospitallers, the castle consits of 5 towers and contains Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology.
